Beef birria tacos

This beef birria, a slow cooker adaptation of a classic Mexican dish, is cooked for a long time with toasty spices to produce a substantial dish ideal for stew, tacos, and other dishes.

What Is Beef Birria

Mexico's Jalisco state is where beef birria first appeared. The word is derived from a Spanish expression that was originally used to denote objects of little to no worth. According to legend, the Spanish conquistadors' attempts to manage the quickly rising goat population they introduced to Mexico led to the development of birria. The taste and texture of goat meat were thought to be exceptionally gamey and extremely rough. Thus, it was prepared using a lengthy, slow cooking method to enhance its flavor.

The dish gained popularity as it spread throughout Mexico and the United States, leading to the creation of other versions. Today, in addition to goat, birria is also prepared using lamb, beef, and pork. But exactly like the original dish, birria meat is still stewed or packed into tacos with the braising broth.

With the aid of the slow cooker, we were able to take all the hearty ingredients of the classic meal and make them a little bit simpler to prepare for our beef birria.

What Does It Taste Like

Beef birria is warm, hearty, and just a little bit spicy. But beef birria tacos add further levels of flavor thanks to a crispy crust and fresh vegetables on top, making it a really flavorful dinner.

Is Birria the Same as Barbacoa

Birria and barbacoa aren't the same thing, despite being quite similar. For instance, barbacoa, which originated in Central Mexico, is frequently prepared over an extended period of time in a hole in the ground. Birria, on the other hand, is prepared by smothering the meat with sauce and cooking it for a substantially less amount of time. It has a more saucier texture.

What Is Beef Birria Made Of?

Beef birria is often made with just braised meat and seasonings. But don't be concerned! You presumably already have the components used in this version.

Chuck Roast Steak: We advise using a bone-in piece of beef for the most tender flesh and greatest flavor. However, if you'd like, you could substitute goat, lamb, pig, or even chicken for the beef!

Herbs and Spices: We used chili powder, cumin, dried oregano, smoked paprika, salt, and red chili pepper to give the food a warm, hearty flavor.

Veggies: Green pepper, onion, and jalapenos combine to produce a harmonious mixture of sweet and spiciness.

Mild Enchilada Sauce: Although it is not used in traditional recipes, we like to use it to substitute for the broth and give a tiny bit of extra heat.

Broth: Broth serves as the foundation for the broth and keeps the meat moist and tender. Whatever you have on hand will work; we like beef broth.

How to Make Beef Birria in a Slow Cooker

Traditional beef birria demands a lot of watching as it cooks and takes a long time to make. With our slow cooker version, we accelerated the procedure and made it quite straightforward. It's not at all genuine, but it's so tasty and simple!

1.The slow cooker should include all the ingredients.

2.Cook with the cover on for 4 hours on high or 6–8 hours on low.

3.Shred the beef.

Birria Stew Alternative

Serving your birria as consommè is the most genuine method to do it (stew). To accomplish this, just cook the meat. Then, when ready to serve, place a few pieces of meat in a dish and pour the remaining liquid on top. Sliced onions and a splash of lime juice are two of your favorite toppings.

How to Make the Best Beef Birria Tacos

Try dipping your corn tortilla shells in the birria meat's liquid for a somewhat more genuine recipe. Then, reheat them over a pan that is filled with the meat and any desired garnish. Fold the tortilla over, pressing it down with a spatula. Cook the shell until it is crisp on each side for 2 to 3 minutes.

Optional Storage

Beef birria tastes even better the next day! Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 4 days. Or, keep them in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Tacos may be reheated in the oven. Alternately, reheat leftovers in the microwave or on the stovetop if they were served as a stew.
